Upskilling and employee development

image

Gala recognizes the need and importance of a well qualified and knowledgeable workforce. Changing market conditions called for a revisit of the tobacco industry towards macadamia production. The continuance of employment was paramount in this transition. We value the individual and uniquely broad aptitude of every employee in the science of agriculture, management, agronomy, logistics, quality control, marketing, and sales.

Gala has instituted a program towards development and training to advance and build on expertise.

Environmental and Social Governance

Gala has formalized adequate and robust systems for monitoring Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS), and Social management, as well as GLOBALG.A.P. standards.

Agriculture is extremely vulnerable to climate change and water resources are becoming more variable. With these future perplexities standing central to Gala`s operations. Our environmental and social governance footprint is marked by dignity to secure future food security.

Gala foster and nurture good relations with surrounding communities and endeavor to uplift and inspire by intervention in the following areas: improved extension services, quality improvement, stakeholder collaboration.

Research and Development

In order to continually upgrade and improve its best practices, Gala has developed a 2 ha trial block that includes various irrigation systems: low-flow drip, surface drip and micro-jet irrigation. Six different varieties of macs were established on this plot for future references and controls – pest management, fertigation, pruning and yield records will be extracted as means to improve the industry in Malawi.

Bulk-Water Systems

8 of our 12 farms have existing storage dams where rainwater is harvested and stored and on the remaining 4 farms, off-shore storage dams will be constructed in the next 3 years. Gala’s water and irrigation needs are covered by using a combination of drawing water from these dams, surrounding rivers as well as using various boreholes. a
